The colored glass is encased in a layer clear glass in sommerso technique, adding depth and complexity to the piece. The bird is sitting on sculptural, rounded base, done in clear glass with gold flecks, elevating it without adding a visually heavy element. The main color is referred to as "Ruby Red" in Weil's catalogue of Alfredo Barbini Murano glass. The piece is marked with the original gold & red oval scalloped foil label, “Venetian - Made by Alfredo Barbini for Weil Ceramics and Glass - Murano Italy”, that was in use in 1960s.
