About the Item

Elegant French Art Deco ceramic sculpture bearing the Primavera mark, made circa 1920 and depicting a stylized young antelope. With its simplified lines, elongated silhouette and strongly graphic treatment, the piece perfectly reflects the modernization of animal sculpture in French decorative arts during the 1920s. The composition is compact yet highly refined. The antelope’s body is modeled in broad, flowing volumes, while the long neck and head rise vertically in a distinctly stylized movement. Rather than aiming for strict naturalism, the design emphasizes rhythm, balance and elegance, qualities closely associated with the Art Deco aesthetic. The ceramic is finished with a light ivory glaze displaying fine natural crazing. Its glossy surface enhances the modeling and catches the light beautifully, while the monochromatic finish reinforces the purity and sculptural strength of the form. The piece bears the Primavera stamp. Based on this marking, the sculpture can be associated with production made for Primavera in connection with the Sainte-Radegonde manufactory, one of the French ceramic centers linked to the brand during the Art Deco period. This connection adds further historical and decorative interest, combining Primavera’s modern design vocabulary with the craftsmanship of French ceramic manufacturing during the interwar years. Dimensions: height 7.9 in. (20 cm); width 7.1 in. (18 cm); depth 2.4 in. (6 cm). A refined example of 1920s French Art Deco ceramics and animal sculpture, especially appealing to collectors of Primavera, Sainte-Radegonde, French ceramic design and interwar decorative arts.
