About the Item

A charming and amusing earthenware Austrian cow figurine made in Vienna by renowned visual artist Leopold Anzengruber (Austrian, 1912-1979) and dating from around 1950. Leopold Anzengruber was born in Steyr, Austria and at a young age moved to Firence, Italy where he spent most of his early life. He returned to Austria during the war and in 1948 acquired the pottery workshop of Gusti Mundt-Amann in Vienna and started his successful business Anzengruber Keramiek. While his work does have elements of Italian pottery styling it also has influences from the Wiener Werkstatte and potters like Walter Bosse. Leopold similarly used terracotta earthenware clays to create his stylish pieces. This delightful quality figure portrays a cow wearing a floral headdress with ribbons hanging over its face and with a harness and bell around its neck. The cow stands raised on four short legs and is swishing its back with its tail trying to remove two mites and a bee. The figure is hand-painted in colored glazes on a white ground and is marked 3 and 142 to the unglazed bases of its hoofs. Provenance: Acquired in the UK Art Market In good presentable condition with a three minor glaze chips.
