About the Item

A whimsical and most unusual hand-crafted iron and bronze crane figure statue table. circa 1940s Dating to the mid-20th century, almost certainly French in origin, finished in oriental Japonisme taste, featuring two finely detailed figural bronze crane bird sculptures, exceptionally executed naturalistic form, perched atop a circular pedestal display stand with fanciful incised decoration, over pierced graduated circle scalloped apron, rising on tripod teepee form sculptural base of three hand forged black wrought iron spiral twist legs, ending in scroll feet. Dimensions: (approx) 46.25" High, 13.5" Wide, 13.5" Deep Tabletop: 11" Diameter Artistic, whimsy, highly decorative and eclectic, this most likely one-of-a-kind work can be placed indoors to create a sense of calming serenity, sophisticated elegance and illusionary depth, or with a little reinforcement outdoors as refined avian landscape statuary, by a peaceful fountain, or as a symbolic ornament in your zen meditation garden. Japonisme is a French term referring to the craze for everything exotic that came from Japan, imitated its style, and influence of Japanese art on Western art. Beginning in the second half of the 19th century when Japan reopened their trading ports with the West (circa 1854), Japanese art objects surged into Europe in extraordinary quantities, particularly France and the Netherlands, who's residents had very little experience with Far East art until then, which set off the Victorian era Aesthetic Movement, where Europeans and Americans desired everything Asian! Starting even earlier, the French would mimic this rare and exotic oriental style in what is known as Japanned, Japenning, Japanesque, Orientalism, and of course Chinoiserie. Condition Report: Good vintage condition with nicely aged patina. Typical wear and tear commensurate with age and use, including scuffs and scratches on top from birds claws resting on it, and the larger bird with past repair to upper beak.
