About the Item

Sujet poule Ceramic, 1954 Edition : 500 ex. Publisher : Édition Picasso, Édition Madoura Catalog : [Ramié 250] Object dimensions (H x W x D) : 13.00 cm. x 11.00 cm. x 17.00 cm. (5.12 in. x 0 in. x 6.69 in.) “Sujet Poule” demonstrates the freedom with which Picasso embraced ceramics beginning in 1947 at the Madoura studio in Vallauris. The white slip, applied as a luminous background, is overlaid with a blue glaze whose variations enliven the surface with a lightness reminiscent of watercolor. But it is the relationship between form and decoration that reveals the genius of the piece: Picasso does not merely decorate a pitcher; he transforms it. The spout becomes a beak, the neck becomes plumage: the object’s functionality and its figurative dimension become one. Ref : LCD7999
