About the Item

A pair of French late 19th century (circa 1880) Grand Tour cast iron and brass-plated busts of Antinous as Bacchus (or Dionysus) and Ariadne, after the original pairing by Leone Clerici in Rome. Antinous /Bacchus is depicted with vine leaves in his hair with his wife Ariadne, her hair in Classical style. The Antinous bust is based on the Lansdown Antinous marble found at Hadrian's villa in Tivoli, Rome in 1769, and is now in the Capitoline Museum, Rome, and the Ariadne bust is after a figure by Bertel Thorvaldsen (1770-1844). The bust of Ariadne shows an old crack on the brass coat on the pedestal base but is structurally sound, the bust of Antinous is in excellent condition, both busts retain their original brown patina. They are un-signed and it is possible that the signature was placed on bases or pedestals now missing. Val d'Osne foundry made similar pairs and it is very likely they were made by the company, circa 1880.
