About the Item

George Henry Paulin was a distinguished artist and sculptor who produced fine and important bronzes and wood carvings, many of them portraits of the rich and famous. After the first world war where he served with distinction, he was commissioned to produce many large bronze war memorials for public display. Through his life his work was widely exhibited at top academies including the RA, RSA the RI and the Royal Glasgow Institute of Fine Arts. He was later elected a fellow of the RBS. He was born in Muckhart near Dollar, Scotland and later attended the Edinburgh College of Art under Percy Portsmouth. He also studied in Rome, Florence and Paris between 1911 and 1914, the outbreak of the 1st world war. This remarkable carved walnut portrait bust depicts a young oriental boy with a soft expression. It is finely detailed and hand finished with all the gorge and chisel cuts displayed on the surface giving this fine piece a wonderful textured and tactile finish. It is worked in rich dense figured walnut with a superb colour and patina and is signed on the reverse with a strong signature. Scottish, circa 1920. Height 48cm x width 30cm x depth 22cm

Late 19th Century Japanese Carved Hardwood Okimono of a Man, circa 1890

Located in Central England, GB

Late 19th C Japanese carved hardwood okimono of a man, circa 1890 This top quality and most impressive large scale Japanese carved hardwood okimono superbly depicts a characterful study of a delightfully crafty looking man. He is dressed simply in a robe. On his back, he has a rolled woven mat for resting and a turtle shell sun hat hangs below. On his side hanging from his waist sash, there is a simple hand fan made from woven palm leaves and around his neck, he is wearing a string of very large beads. This unfortunate character is on a journey and he seems to have lost or broken one sandal. His foot is sore and he is resting it on his gnarly walking stick. He has one arm outstretched and is holding out a large piece of fresh fruit as an offering perhaps to barter for new sandals...
