Antique French Bronze of Sainte Maria by De Beaumont, 19th Century

About the Item

This is a large finely cast brown patinated bronze ormolu and marble sculpture of Sainte Marie by De Beaumont. It is signed on the base and also inscribed "Susse Frères Plaice de la Bouise a Paris", circa 1840 in date. It features the full figure of a crowned Madonna and Child with the pious Virgin Mary smiling down on the infant Jesus held in her arms. She is dressed in flowing robes and stands on a square bronze plinth which is engraved "SAINTE MARIE". The plinth is raised on a stunning Verde Antico marble base which is decoratively framed with an egg and dart gilt ormolu cornice and base. This high-quality bronze is made from the lost wax process, otherwise known as “Cire Perdue” Condition: In excellent condition, please see photos for confirmation. Dimensions in cm: Height 59 x width 17 x depth 17 Dimensions in inches: Height 23.2 x width 6.7 x depth 6.7 Susse Foundry The Susse brothers company was founded in Paris in 1758, originally a stationery trade, and won acclaim in the art foundry. It is today the oldest art foundry in France still operating under the Susse Fondeur brand. The two Susse brothers, Nicolas and Victor, began by selling small bronzes in their stationery in the Passage des Panoramas in Paris. We find traces of their new activity of art founders in 1839, they publish a small catalogue of their production. This is their first major contract with a renowned sculptor, James Pradier, who launched their company in 1841. In 1847, they use the Collas-Sauvage reduction process which allows the realization of small bronzes of furnishing. Under the Second Empire, the house prospered thanks to many artists completing its catalogue. Nicolas and Victor being dead, it is Albert Susse who continues the activity, relying on two retail stores of sale in Paris. A third will open in the 1900s at No. 13 Boulevard de la Madeleine. The Susse house then has the exclusivity of artists such as Pierre-Jules Mene, Auguste Cain, Pierre-Nicolas Tourgueneff, Yevgeny Alexandrovitch Lanceray, and also publishes Louis-Ernest Barrias, Jules Dalou, Alexander Falguiere or Mathurin Moreau. Susse brothers also Madonna in marble works by Jules Dalou by Jean-Baptiste Carpeaux. Since their move in January 2013, the foundry workshops are located at 19 Perrot Street in Malakoff. Many contemporary artists have been found, including Olivier Babin, Elsa Sahal, Mark Handforth, Alessandro Montalbano, Sylvie Fleury, Wang Keping, Boris Lejeune, Agnès Bracquemond, Pierre-Edouard and Sam Szafran. In 2015, the foundry opened a new exhibition gallery at our 56-62 Montpensier gallery in Paris5. The Susse foundry has been awarded the "Living Heritage Company". Lost Wax Method sometimes called by the French name of cire perdue or the Latin, cera perduta is the process by which a bronze or brass is cast from an artists sculpture. In industrial uses, the modern process is called investment casting. An ancient practice, the process today varies from foundry to foundry, but the steps which are usually used in casting small bronze sculptures in a modern bronze foundry are generally quite standardized.
