About the Item

A finely executed late 19th century Italian carved alabaster bust depicting Marguerite (Gretchen), the tragic heroine from Johann Wolfgang von Goethe’s Faust. Dating to approximately 1890, this sculptural work reflects the strong influence of Neoclassical and Romantic traditions that characterized Italian sculpture of the period, particularly in devotional and literary subjects. The bust portrays Marguerite with delicately braided hair framing her face and falling softly over her shoulders. Her serene, introspective expression is rendered with great sensitivity, while the inclusion of a cross pendant suspended from her necklace emphasizes her innocence and religious symbolism, elements central to the character’s narrative. The translucent quality of the alabaster enhances the softness of the facial features and contributes to the refined, luminous surface typical of high-quality Italian carving. The sculpture measures approximately 16.5 inches high, 10 inches wide, and 5 inches deep. It is in good condition, with minor wear consistent with age and use. There are no damages, losses, or repairs noted & the round base is not attach. This bust demonstrates excellent Italian craftsmanship, with careful attention to anatomical proportion, surface finish, and expressive detail. Both decorative and evocative, it serves as a compelling conversation piece and is well suited for display in a wide range of interiors, from traditional to more eclectic settings.
