About the Item

One-of-a-kind ceramic sculpture by Antonio Sabatelli Biography Antonio Sabatelli, painter, sculptor and ceramist, considered one of the most brilliant exponents of the national artistic scene of the 1950s and 1960s, (it was customary to sign his works «Saba-telli»). Since he was a child he tried his hand at clay and at 14 he went to Tullio Mazzotti and Bianco to learn. After this initial training in his hometown, in 1938 he ran away from home and moved to Turin, where he met Persico, Levi and became a pupil of Luigi Spazzapan, the artist he considered most interesting because he did not hold exhibitions, did not sell paintings and shunned all the “isms” of his time. In ’40 he moved to Milan, where he became friends with the sculptor Broggini and in the meantime, having obtained his high school diploma, he enrolled first in the faculty of medicine and, subsequently, in that of architecture. After the war he landed in Paris. Here he frequented artists and writers: Camus, Caffi, Salvemini and Sartre and also taught ceramics in courses organised by the Italian Cultural Institute. A great traveler, he travels to Holland, Switzerland, England and Germany. Antonio Sabatelli, returning to Albissola Marina in the 1960s, established a collaboration with the factories of Bianco d'Albisola and ”Isola Ceramiche” owned by Tonino Tortarolo and Federico Anselmo. These were golden years for the neo-avant-garde of ceramics, as a vehicle for expression: Lucio Fontana, who lived near Pozzo Garitta, had arrived in Albisola. In 1957 the first group exhibition was inaugurated,bringing together only Fontana, Sassu, Fabbri, Reggiani and Siri. For the first time, the logo created and offered to the artists' club by Antonio Sabatelli appears. After that, Sabatelli created numerous initiatives and exhibitions, and Albissola's exhibition of kites painted by the artists themselves remains unforgettable. A famous meeting place for artists were the tables of Checchin, where artists such as Aligi Sassu, Agenore Fabbri, Asger Jorn, Karel Appel, Roberto Crippa met. Antonio Sabatelli rarely joined these colleagues: even though he was a full member of that movement, he remained on the sidelines. This is in the name of his anarchic and rebellious temperament. In 1963 he was among the twenty artist-ceramists who contributed to the creation of the Lungomare degli Artisti in Albissola Marina, where one of the polychrome panels is his. In the same year he competed in the fifth edition of the Albisolese Festival. In the following years he created original majolica pieces from the kilns of the Albisola factory “San Giorgio“. As late as 1969, thanks to the technical support of Tonino Tortarolo and the commercial action of Angelo Germano, he established the “ovengallery” (laboratory, furnace and art gallery) “La Ruota” in Albissola Mare, starting a production of monotypic artist products and architectural complements and setting up a space reserved for exhibitions, which featured works by important Italian and foreign ceramists. The workshop-gallery remained active for only a few years, after which Saba Telli, a restless and angry spirit, left ceramics around the mid-seventies and retired from artistic activity. However, he does not fail to collaborate with UNESCO and the Paris Film Library, and also works as a photographer for Vogue magazine.
