About the Item

Hippolyte François Moreau (1832–1927) Large White Carrare Marble Sculpture of an Art Nouveau Nymph, circa 1890-1900 A magnificent carved white Carrare marble sculpture depicting a young, nude nymph seated against a rugged, natural rock formation simulated by unpolished marble. The delicate drapery and the fluid wavy lines of her long hair, adorned with finely detailed flowers, beautifully reflect the Art Nouveau and Romantic aesthetics of the late 19th century and beginning of the 20th century. The sculptor masterfully plays with contrasting textures, opposing the smooth, satin-like finish of the female form (showcased in the exquisite carving of the hands and feet) against the raw, unpolished, and highly textured surface of the rocky backdrop. This piece exudes a profound sense of sensuality and remarkable technical virtuosity. Signed "H-P. MOREAU" directly into the marble matrix near the base of the rock. circa 1890--1900
