About the Item

Boldly and brilliantly sculpted in high relief, this depiction of a sea-goat (half goat, half fish) -- the classic symbol of Capricorn -- was sculpted by Paul Manship, the most important American sculptor creating high style Art Deco works in the 1920s, 1930s and 1940s. Here, Manship fancifully presents the sea goat prancing above the Art Deco waves of the sea. This bronze dish is one of a set of 12 sculpted in 1946, and is signed and dated. Manship is perhaps best known for his magisterial "Prometheus" sculpture at Rockefeller Centre in New York, which now presides over the skating rink in winter time. The sculptor also created other works for Rockefeller Centre, as well as major pieces for the Bronx Zoo and Central Park Zoo; the Palais des Nations in Geneva, Switzerland; and Cochran Park in St. Paul, Minnesota. The piece is boldly signed and dated on the bottom edge of the scene.
