About the Item

A sculptural shell vase by C.H. Brannam, Barnstaple, England, dating to approximately 1965. Modelled as an elongated spiral shell, this striking stoneware vessel reflects the organic modernism that became increasingly popular in British decorative ceramics during the 1960s. Handcrafted in stoneware, the vase is finished in a soft satin ivory glaze that accentuates the flowing contours and naturalistic form. The generous opening at one end allows the piece to function equally well as a flower vase or as a sculptural object in its own right. Founded in 1848, Brannam Pottery became one of Britain's most respected art potteries, achieving international recognition for its craftsmanship and innovation. While the company is best known for its late Victorian and Arts & Crafts wares, its post-war production embraced the clean, sculptural aesthetic of Mid-Century Modern design. Decorative forms such as this shell vase were produced in considerably smaller numbers than the firm's utilitarian ceramics and have become increasingly sought after by collectors of British studio and art pottery. The underside bears the impressed C.H. Brannam, Barnstaple, Made in England factory mark together with the impressed model number. Condition is very good for its age and use, with light age-related crazing to the glaze and minor firing imperfections acquired during manufacture. These are consistent with traditional stoneware production and do not detract from its presentation. Dimensions Height: 11.5 cm (4.53 in) Width: 27.5 cm (10.83 in) Depth: 13 cm (5.12 in)
