About the Item

Capture a charming moment of everyday life with this antique Belgian sculpture by Victor Rousseau. Crafted circa 1932, the finely modeled spelter composition depicts a young barefoot boy pausing over a bowl of soup while his loyal dog sits attentively at his side, gazing upward in hopeful anticipation. The touching interaction between child and animal reflects Rousseau’s talent for bringing warmth, humanity, and narrative character to his work. Standing on a naturalistic textured base, the figure is beautifully detailed throughout, from the folds of the boy’s clothing and expressive posture to the attentive features of the dog. The sculpture retains its rich brown patinated finish, which highlights the depth and modeling of the composition. Signed “V. Rousseau” on the base and bearing foundry and authentication marks, the piece is a wonderful example of Belgian Art Deco-era sculpture. Victor Rousseau (1865–1954) was one of Belgium’s most celebrated sculptors and medalists. A professor and later director of the Académie Royale des Beaux-Arts in Brussels, he gained international recognition for his allegorical and figurative works, many of which can be found in public monuments and museum collections throughout Europe. The antique sculpture is in excellent condition commensurate with age and use, and adorns a rich, warm patinated finish. There is a small dent to the dog’s back consistent with age. Dimensions: 9.5”W x 7.5”D x 23”H.
