About the Item

A striking early 20th-century French sculptural fragment, carved in solid boxwood and depicting a raised arm and hand. The piece comes from a French workshop known for the production of carved wooden Christs and religious sculpture. Rather than being a finished devotional object, this fragment offers a fascinating glimpse into the craft and working process of the sculptor. The elongated, powerfully modeled form is entirely hand-carved, with beautifully preserved gouge marks visible across the surface. These marks give the sculpture a particularly expressive and tactile quality, emphasizing the directness of the carving and the natural character of the boxwood. The warm, honey-colored patina and irregular surface further enhance its sculptural presence. Displayed on its own, the fragment takes on a distinctly modern, almost abstract quality while retaining its original religious and artisanal context. A rare and evocative example of early 20th-century French wood carving.
