About the Item

This rare French Art Deco sculpture, titled Leda and the Swan, was created by French artist Gabriel Beauvais during the 1920s. Made of terracotta and finished with an elegant crackle-glazed ceramic surface, the sculpture presents a refined interpretation of the celebrated mythological story of Leda and Zeus, who appeared to her in the form of a swan. The composition combines classical mythology with the stylized elegance and sensuality characteristic of French Art Deco sculpture. The carefully modeled figures, flowing lines, and subtly textured craquelé glaze give the piece a strong decorative presence while preserving the delicacy of the subject. Produced in Paris by Kaza Édition, this sculpture is documented in the reference book Craquelés Art Deco by Alain Hardy and Bruno Giardi, published by Éditions Penthesilla in 2009, where it is illustrated on page 72. This published reference reinforces the sculpture’s authenticity, historical importance, and appeal to collectors of French Art Deco ceramics. The sculpture is signed “G. Beauvais” and marked “France” on the base, as shown in the photographs. It remains in very good antique condition. A small chip is visible along the lower edge of the base, but it is discreet and does not affect the overall appearance, stability, or decorative quality of the work. Measuring 17.5 inches wide, 14.5 inches high, and 7.8 inches deep, this important French ceramic sculpture would make an exceptional addition to a refined Art Deco interior, private collection, gallery, or decorative arts display. By Ugo Cipriani

Located in Saint-Amans-des-Cots, FR

Large French Art Deco Terracotta Sculpture by Ugo Cipriani (1887–1960), France 1920. An exceptional large-scale French Art Deco terracotta sculpture by renowned Italian-born sculptor Ugo Cipriani (1887–1960), depicting a graceful nude female figure in a dynamic kneeling pose. Rich in movement and emotion, this striking work perfectly captures the elegance, sensuality, and modernity that define the Art Deco period. Executed in terracotta, the sculpture displays warm natural tones and finely modeled anatomical details, highlighting Cipriani’s remarkable ability to convey both strength and femininity. The dramatic upward gaze and fluid composition create a powerful visual presence, making this piece an outstanding focal point for an Art Deco interior, sculpture collection, or curated design space. The sculpture is signed "U. Cipriani" on the base, confirming its authenticity. Dimensions: Height: 24 in (61 cm) Width: 20.9 in (53 cm) Depth: 7.5 in (19 cm) Born in Florence, Ugo Cipriani studied at the Florence Academy of Fine Arts and became known for his mastery of marble, bronze, alabaster, and terracotta. The son of sculptor Adolfo Cipriani, he developed a distinctive style influenced by the refined geometry and decorative elegance of the 1920s and 1930s. Among his notable achievements is the 1919 bronze monument dedicated to Guglielmo Oberdan in Florence. In 1935, Cipriani relocated to Paris as a political refugee, leaving Fascist Italy behind. He continued his artistic career in France, where he remained active until his death in 1960. A rare and highly decorative example of French Art Deco sculpture, this authentic Ugo Cipriani terracotta...
