About the Item

This rare French Art Deco porcelain liquor bottle was created in Paris circa 1924 by Georges Bastard and designed by the artist E. Margerie. Crafted from white Limoges porcelain, the bottle depicts a stylized cyclist, capturing the enthusiasm for athletic competition that defined France during the Roaring Twenties and the year of the 1924 Paris Olympic Games. The cyclist’s raised arm cleverly forms the bottle’s handle, combining humor, movement, and functionality in a design characteristic of the finest French Art Deco decorative objects. The figure is signed “E. Margerie” on the body, while the underside bears the mark “G. Bastard Éditeur Paris France.” This porcelain cyclist belongs to an exceptionally scarce series of sports-themed bottles commissioned by Georges Bastard from Margerie during the 1920s. Margerie, who also designed for the celebrated Parisian firm Robj, created a distinctive group of sporting figures for Bastard, including athletes associated with the growing popularity of modern sports. Produced in very limited quantities, Bastard bottles are considerably rarer than comparable Robj examples and are highly desirable among collectors of French Art Deco porcelain, vintage barware, sports memorabilia, and Olympic-related design. Georges Bastard was a prominent French decorative artist, publisher, and designer who exhibited at major Paris salons and at the influential 1925 International Exhibition of Modern Decorative and Industrial Arts. He later became director of the Limoges School of Decorative Arts, curator of the Musée Adrien Dubouché, and director of the Sèvres Porcelain Manufactory. Offered from our private collection, this cyclist bottle is one of the few surviving examples from Margerie’s celebrated series for Bastard. Dimensions: Height 10.4 in. (26.5 cm); Width 3.9 in. (10 cm); Depth 6.5 in. (16.5 cm).
