About the Item

Julien Caussé’s most renowned work, La Fée des Glaces, features a figure crafted in spelter, set atop an opalescent glass base sculpted to resemble an iceberg, created in collaboration with the firm of Eugène Rousseau. The figure is adorned with a crown of flowers and wears an elegant off-the-shoulder gown. Item #: S-21797 Artist: Julien Caussé Country: France Circa: 1890 Dimensions: 23" height, 7" width, 6" depth. Materials: Glass, Spelter Signed: "J. Caussé" Literature: A similar sculpture is pictured in A. Duncan, Art Nouveau Sculpture, New York, 1978, p. 87 Macklowe Gallery Curator's Notes: The piece is likely inspired by the Scandinavian legend of Skadi, reimagined in French by Frédéric Dobritz in his 1887 book Contes et légendes scandinaves. In Dobritz’s adaptation, Skadi, originally a Winter Giantess, is transformed into an ice fairy, or Fée des Glaces. According to the tale, Skadi’s devotion to winter made her unable to endure the heat or the sight of greenery, causing her to melt into water and merge with the ocean. As a reward for her kindness, Odin arranged for her to marry Njord, one of the gods of the sea.
