About the Item

Just Andersen Danish Art Deco Disko Metal Young Man with Fish Sculpture 1742 Designed by the celebrated Danish sculptor and designer Just Andersen (1884–1943), this exceptional Art Deco sculpture is cast in Andersen’s proprietary Disko metal and bears the original JUST / DENMARK foundry mark with model number 1742. Measuring 9 inches high, this is the documented production size for one of Andersen’s most admired figural compositions. The sculpture portrays an idealized youthful nude seated among shells and marine forms while embracing a boldly stylized fish. Rather than illustrating a specific narrative, the composition evokes the timeless relationship between humanity and the sea—a recurring theme in Andersen’s work. The large expressive fish, scallop shell, and flowing aquatic forms are rendered with the geometric restraint and elegant simplification that define Scandinavian Art Deco at its finest. Produced during the height of the Second World War, while Denmark was under German occupation, this sculpture stands as a testament to the remarkable resilience of Just Andersen’s Copenhagen workshop. Despite the severe material shortages and economic hardships of the early 1940s, Andersen’s studio continued to produce works of exceptional artistic merit, maintaining the high standards of casting and patination that established his international reputation. As Andersen passed away in 1943, sculptures from this final period of his career represent the culmination of his artistic vision and craftsmanship. This example is distinguished by the extraordinary quality of its casting. The facial features remain exceptionally crisp, with sharply defined eyes, lips, fingers, and beautifully articulated hair beneath the fitted cap. The powerful fish displays deeply modeled fins and expressive features, while the elongated neck, refined anatomy, and harmonious proportions demonstrate Andersen’s remarkable ability to unite classical ideals with the streamlined elegance of the Art Deco movement. The original warm brown patina has matured beautifully, developing subtle areas of natural verdigris within the recessed details that enhance the sculpture’s depth and character. The untouched surface and bold modeling give the figure exceptional visual presence, making it a notably finer example than those more commonly encountered. Just Andersen occupies an important place in twentieth-century Scandinavian design, successfully bridging the worlds of fine sculpture and decorative arts. His patented Disko metal alloy became synonymous with his workshop and remains one of the defining materials of Danish Art Deco. Today, his finest sculptures are increasingly appreciated for their sculptural sophistication, historical significance, and enduring modernity. A particularly bold and exceptionally well-preserved example of Model 1742, combining superior casting quality, rich original patina, and the historical significance of a sculpture produced during the final years of Andersen’s career.
