About the Item

This 1940s bronze sculpture wall plaque of a profile portrait of a woman's face, possibly his wife was created by New York native artist and sculptor, Sacha S. Schnittmann (Russian/American 1913-1978). Unsigned or dated, has note on verso, no doubt by Schnittmann. Traces of old paint on bronze, plus three holes for mounting to wall or wood. I own and have own several pieces by Schnittmann, including bronze lamps and large sculpture of a man walking dogs, all dated in the 40s. His work is uncommon and rare to the market. Schnittmann also worked with mid-century architect Meyer Loomstein, placing his WPA style sculptures in his residences, office and commercial buildings in St.Louis. This piece shown in the article is known as "Force of Modern Architecture" Schnittmann arrived in St. Louis from New York in 1942 after being appointed Professor of Creative Sculpture and Anatomy at Fontbonne and Maryville Colleges. During the same year, Schnittmann was commissioned by the Monument Builders of America to design and create what became the American Legion Founding Commemorative Monument. The monument is located in St. Louis at Eternal Flame Park After becoming frustrated with the St. Louis community due to its lack of an "artistic future", Schnittmann left St. Louis with his family in 1952.
