Nineteenth century Italian bronze model of Seated Hermes, stamped 'GIORGIO SOMMER FOUNDRY, NAPLES', set on marble plinth base. Dimensions: 44cm (17¼") High, 42cm (16½") Wide, Base 26.5 cm x 38 cm The G. Sommer Foundry in Naples was among the foremost Neapolitan ateliers specialising in the production of finely executed reproductions of Classical sculpture during the latter half of the nineteenth century. Drawing extensively upon celebrated antiquities excavated at Pompeii and Herculaneum, the foundry produced casts in a range of scales and finishes, catering to the flourishing Grand Tour market. These bronzes and plaster casts served both as cultured souvenirs and as embodiments of the period's enduring fascination with the art of classical antiquity. In the early twentieth century, the Sommer foundry was absorbed into the J. Chiurazzi foundry, thereby continuing its legacy within one of Italy's most distinguished bronze-casting enterprises. Founded by the German-born photographer Giorgio Sommer, who settled in Italy in 1857, the foundry was established in Naples around 1885. Sommer had already achieved considerable renown as one of the pioneers of nineteenth-century photography, particularly for his documentation of Italy's archaeological sites and landscapes. His foundry became one of a select number of Neapolitan workshops devoted to reproducing the masterpieces of Greco-Roman sculpture unearthed at Pompeii and Herculaneum, offering discerning international collectors faithful reductions in a variety of sizes and materials. In addition to these archaeological reproductions, Sommer commissioned leading contemporary sculptors to create original models, further enhancing the artistic scope and reputation of the workshop. The original prototype for the present work, variously known as the Resting Hermes or Seated Mercury, was discovered in 1758 during the excavations of the Villa of the Papyri at Herculaneum. The ancient marble, now preserved in the National Archaeological Museum of Naples, is generally regarded as a first-century AD Roman copy of a late fourth- or early third-century BC Greek original, traditionally attributed to the celebrated sculptor Lysippos. Renowned for his innovative treatment of proportion and naturalistic pose, Lysippos profoundly influenced the development of Hellenistic sculpture, and this contemplative representation of Hermes exemplifies the elegance and restrained vitality associated with his artistic legacy.
