About the Item

An interesting and well-modelled pair of late 19th century French terracotta renaissance style figures after Albert-Ernest Carrier-Belleuse (1824-1887) with a bronzed finish. The leftmost figure is after a known work by Carrier-Belleuse titled ‘Lansquenet with Halberd’ and is modelled as bearded man in renaissance style military dress. Traditionally, he holds a halberd but this one holds a simpler, possibly replacement, spear which is removeable. The rightmost armoured figure is not named, referenced simply as a soldier and is typically pictured with a sword which, in this version, is not present. Both sculptures are mounted to a socle, marked to the inside base with initials of an unknown maker, ready for display in an interior. They will make handsome feature pieces at either end of a fireplace mantel or placed on plinths either side of an interior doorway or arch.
