About the Item

An impressive and unusual pair of late 19th century patinated chalk figures by Dopmeier, depicting two distinguished historical intellectual figures standing in period dress upon integral bases. One figure is portrayed in flowing academic robes with wonderfully detailed drapery and curled hair, while the companion figure is shown in formal 19th century attire, holding a book and standing in a confident pose. Both figures are exceptionally well modelled with expressive facial features and finely executed detail throughout the garments and folds. They retain their original bronzed patinated finish with attractive aged tones and natural surface variation, adding considerable depth and character. One figure bears the impressed signature “Dopmeier” together with the date “1869” to the base. Dimensions Height: 24 inches – 61cm Width: 9.5 inches – 24cm Depth: 9.5 inches – 24cm
