About the Item

A finely cast patinated bronze figure of Napoleon Bonaparte depicted standing in contemplative pose, dressed in his iconic bicorne hat, military uniform and sweeping greatcoat, his hands clasped behind his back in the manner of many of the most recognisable imperial portraits of the Emperor. Dating to the mid-19th century, this charming bronze reflects the enduring fascination with Napoleon that swept across Europe throughout the 19th century, particularly during the reign of Napoleon III, when Napoleonic imagery once again became highly fashionable in both France and England. Bronzes such as this were prized by collectors for their combination of historical romance, military grandeur and sculptural presence. The sculptor has captured the unmistakable silhouette of Napoleon with considerable character and economy of form: the oversized bicorne, closely buttoned military coat, high boots and enveloping cloak all contributing to the instantly recognisable image of the Emperor in reflective command. Particularly appealing is the restrained, almost introspective treatment of the figure, evoking the legendary image of Napoleon surveying his empire and battlefields in quiet contemplation rather than triumphant theatricality. The bronze retains a rich, mellow patina which enhances the sculpture’s depth and period character, beautifully contrasted by the warm golden tones of the finely stepped Sienna marble plinth, creating an elegant and highly decorative presentation. The underside bears the impressed signature “Pradier”, in reference to Jean-Jacques Pradier, one of the foremost Neoclassical sculptors of the early 19th century. Born in Geneva to a French family, Pradier studied in Paris under François-Frédéric Lemot and rose to prominence during the Napoleonic era, later becoming celebrated for his refined modelling, classical compositions and highly accomplished bronzes and marbles. His works combined the purity of Neoclassicism with the emerging Romantic sensibility of the period, making his sculptures particularly influential and sought after throughout the 19th century.
