Expertise: Manuela Finaz de Villaine - Marvil Conseil, European Ceramics The expertise will be attached. Tamara Karsavina was a famous Russian ballerina, renowned for her beauty, who was most noted as a Principal Artist of the Imperial Russian Ballet and later the Ballets Russes of Serge Diaghilev. The Lomonosov Porcelain Factory, or Imperial Porcelain Factory of St. Petersburg, was founded in 1744 following an order from Elisabeth Petrovna, daughter of Peter the Great of Russia. It became the third porcelain factory in Europe. With the Catherine II in 1762, Russian porcelain enjoy a golden age and was one of the most popular in Europe. Natiionalized in 1918, the factory became a showcase for the Russian Revolution and edited figures of even more propagandists subjects. According to Jean Michel Palmier, French art historian and philosopher, "there are only a few contries that have spent so much money for their fine arts, theater, literature and painting than the URSS during its most difficult period it had know. The young Soviet republic spend huge sums of money to develop art and not only as an instrument of propaganda" The phenomenon of Ballets Russes would not dominated in fact memories without the costumes and scenery by Leon Bakst, Alexandre Benois and Nicolas Roerich. It was Leon Bakst who created the sets and wardrobe for Scheherezade as well as the Firebird costune danced by Tamara Karsavina in the title role witch was one of his greatest successes. The magnificence of this costume inspired the painter Jacques-Emile Blanche with his dazzling flamboyant portrait with extreme virtuosity in the rendering of materials and lighting effects. This portrait hangs in the Museum-Library of the Opera, Paris.
