About the Item

Germany, circa 1850 A rare and finely carved set of the Four Evangelists, represented in their traditional full-sculptural symbolic forms. Executed in Germany around 1850, these remarkable carvings are exceptional examples of 19th-century ecclesiastical art, combining rich symbolism with outstanding craftsmanship. Each figure is expertly hand-carved in wood and retains its original polychrome decoration. The predominantly gilt and silvered surfaces are beautifully complemented by striking iridescent, rainbow-colored wings, creating an extraordinary visual effect and enhancing the sculptures' decorative appeal. The set comprises the four traditional symbols of the Evangelists: The Lion – Saint Mark The Angel – Saint Matthew The Eagle – Saint John The Ox – Saint Luke These symbolic representations, derived from the biblical visions of Ezekiel and the Book of Revelation, have been central to Christian iconography for centuries and are commonly found in important ecclesiastical interiors. Remarkably preserved and highly decorative, this rare ensemble is equally suited to a collection of European sacred art, ecclesiastical sculpture, or as a distinctive statement in a refined interior.
