About the Item

Joyful and full of energy, this rare -- possibly unique -- sculpture by Just Andersen depicts a merboy, complete with fins on each feet, riding a plump fish through the sea, his mouth agape with wonder. The material is a heavy stoneware often termed "Sandstone" which has a textured, speckled surface that convincingly approximates stone. Andersen was a prolific and important sculptor in the 1920s, 30s and 40s, producing an array of pieces in ceramic, bronze and an alloy he called Disko metal that approximated the feel and look of bronze. The artist often depicted children and mythological creates living in the sea, which have a joyful dignity that is enchanting. The piece is marked on the bottom.

"Hauling the Net, " Rare Art Deco Bronze with Nude Male Fisherman

By Alexandre Ouline

Located in Philadelphia, PA

This powerful bronze -- depicting a nude fisherman hauling in his net -- is a superb example of Art Deco sculpture influenced by Auguste Rodin's emphasis on the emotion and physicality of the human figure. Here, the strength and muscularity of the male figure is shown to great effect, its power belying the sculpture's diminutive size. It was sculpted by Alexandre Ouline, who executed a series of bronzes that depicted male figures performing feats of strength and courage, such as pulling a great weight or steering a ship in a stormy sea. Ouline won First Prize in the Seine et Marne agricultural fair...
