About the Item

Impressive large Art Deco–Art Nouveau figurative group in glazed porcelain biscuit by Royal Dux, Bohemia, circa 1919–1920. Titled “The Young Lady and the Fan,” this elegant sculptural composition depicts a graceful female figure holding a fan, rendered with fluid lines and refined modeling. The piece reflects the transition from late Art Nouveau naturalism to early Art Deco stylization, a hallmark of Royal Dux production during the post–World War I period. The porcelain is finished in a delicately glazed biscuit, emphasizing the sculptural quality and subtle surface textures. The group is signed “Royal Dux F Czechoslovakia” beneath the base, confirming its authenticity and period of production. A striking decorative object, ideal as a centerpiece or statement sculpture, and highly collectible for admirers of early 20th-century European porcelain. Manufacturer: Royal Dux Origin: Bohemia (Austria, now Czechoslovakia) Period: 1919–1920 Material: Glazed porcelain biscuit Style: Art Nouveau / Art Deco Measurements Height: 15.75 in (40 cm) Width: 8.9 in (22.5 cm) Depth: 7.9 in (20 cm) Condition Excellent condition No chips, cracks, or restorations observed Royal Dux is one of the most prestigious porcelain manufacturers of Central Europe. Founded in 1853 near Prague in the town of Dux (Duchcov), the factory initially produced utilitarian ceramic wares. Its artistic direction changed dramatically when it was acquired by Eduard Eichler, a renowned sculptor and designer, marking the beginning of its international success. From the late 19th century—particularly after 1898—Royal Dux became celebrated for the exceptional quality of its Art Nouveau porcelain, producing vases, figurines, and sculptural groups. Female figures, floral motifs, seashell bases, fountains, and allegorical themes became defining elements of the firm’s style. Many pieces were executed in biscuit porcelain, sometimes glazed, gilded, or delicately painted, often in soft green or pastel tones. A key figure in Royal Dux’s artistic success during this period was Alois Hampel, the company’s principal modeler-decorator, whose refined sculptural language greatly influenced its iconic output. Royal Dux works from the Art Nouveau and early Art Deco periods are today highly sought after by collectors for their expressive modeling, elegance, and distinctive Central European aesthetic.
