About the Item

A compelling studio work by Claude Litschgy (born 1949), known under the artistic name Luscoz — sculptor, plasticien, and scion of one of Alsace's most distinguished artistic families. Born in 1949 in Pfastatt, Haute-Alsace, Litschgy trained at the art schools of Basel from 1966 to 1968, grounding his practice in the rigorous Central European modernist tradition. The Litschgy name runs deep in Alsatian cultural life — René Litschgy (1898–1940) and Emma Litschgy née Wolff (1896–1981) are both recorded figures in the regional canon — and Claude carries this lineage forward as a sculptor of both intimate studio works and significant public commissions, including a large-scale relief installed at the Port d'Austerlitz, Paris, in 1984. This small but arresting figure was carved in that same year. Rounded, voluminous, and deeply sensual, it depicts an abstracted female form in the tradition of modernist primitivism — evoking the fertility goddesses of antiquity while speaking the formal language of mid-20th century European sculpture. The warm, densely grained wood has been hand-carved and polished to a silken finish, every curve deliberate, every surface alive with the grain of the material. Signed C. Litschgy on the back and dated -84 on the base. The artist's personal maker's mark — a tiny carved smiling face (see photo), full of warmth and wit, set into the natural knot of the wood — is discovered only when you turn the piece over. It feels like a secret left by the artist's hand. Sourced directly in Alsace, France. Litschgy's work has been recognised at the highest levels of French sculpture. He was awarded the Grand Prix de Sculpture de la Ville de Mulhouse (1978), the Grand Prix de Sculpture, Concours de Sculpture de la Ville de Thionville (1979), the Prix National de Sculpture, Fondation Michel Ange, Corte (1980), and the Prix de Sculpture, Biennale Formes et Couleurs, Nancy (1982). That same year he received the Médaille d'Or at the International Art Exposition in New York. He is also the recipient of the prestigious Prix Félix Fénéon — awarded by a jury that included Louis Aragon, Marcel Arland, Jean-Louis Barrault, Michel Butor and André Masson — and is a member of the Fondation Taylor, Paris. His work is documented in the Dictionnaire Biographique des Artistes Plasticiens de France and the Répertoire des Artistes d'Alsace. In good condition for its age. The wood retains its original polish and warm patina. Minor surface marks and a small crack at the base (see photos) consistent with four decades of handling (see photos).
