About the Item

A Spanish 18th century sculpture of Virgin Immaculata Madonna. This is a fabulous antique sculpture of a Virgin Immaculata Madonna created by a member of the Spanish school in the middle of 18th century, circa 1750-1775. The exquisite carving depicts the Madonna standing and dressed with very richly decorated ropes. The carving is gorgeous with great skills, showing great details at the face expression, the hands and the feet's toes. The outline of the garments is very well done and reminds us of the Madonna painted by the Spanish painter Murillo. The Immaculate Conception is a Roman Catholic dogma declaring that the Virgin Mary was preserved free from original sin from the first moment of her conception in Saint Anne's womb. Proclaimed by Pope Pius IX in 1854, this singular grace was granted by God in anticipation of her role as the mother of Jesus. Most probably this sculpture was part of a bigger composition or an altar, and actually stand in a modern removable wood base. Pieces of art from this period are very rare as it is a very particular religious and devotional art in Spain. As a piece of 18th century Spanish art school is a unique opportunity to own. Baroque Immaculata This kind of baroque sculptures are dramatic and emotional representations of the Virgin Mary, usually depicted standing on a crescent moon, globe, and serpent to symbolize her purity and victory over sin. Key examples include Jakob Schletterer’s 1758 marble statue in Tata, Hungary and the 18th-century Neapolitan works of Matteo Bottiglieri. These works, often featuring flowing drapery and emotional expressions, were central to Catholic Counter-Reformation art. Country: Spanish School, Spain. Period: Baroque, 1750-1775.
