About the Item

In this listing you will find a striking handcrafted mosaic panel attributed to the celebrated Serbian and Yugoslav artist Ratomir Gligorijević Gliga (1924–2014). The composition depicts a stylized frontal portrait executed in irregular tesserae of natural stone, arranged in a manner reminiscent of early Byzantine and medieval Balkan mosaics. The figure is rendered using warm earth-toned stones framed by dark outlines, while a vibrant field of turquoise and pale green tesserae creates a luminous background suggestive of a halo or aura. The mosaic is set within a sculpted plaster relief featuring subtle linear motifs and housed in a simple wooden frame that complements its architectural character. The work reflects Gliga's longstanding interest in monumental art, mosaic techniques, and the visual language of medieval frescoes and ecclesiastical decoration. The intentionally naïve facial modeling, expressive eyes, and restrained palette evoke the spiritual qualities often associated with Byzantine iconography while maintaining a distinctly modernist sensibility. Executed with hand-cut stone tesserae of varying sizes and depths, the panel possesses a rich tactile surface and remarkable material presence.
