About the Item

This striking sculpture is in fact an exceptionally well-preserved, large and beautiful example of the earliest human technology. The iconic leaf-shape or tear-drop form is associated with our early ancestors - Homo heidelbergensis - who developed this multipurpose tool to aid survival in the prehistoric environment. But this technology also marked a major step in early human evolution. By chipping away at a nodule of flint with a hammerstone - a technique known as knapping - the early hominin produced a beautiful, geometric stone axe, with knife-like edges, that could cut, tear, scrape and even signify status. Lasting from c.1.7 million to c.100,000 years ago, this industry - known as the Acheulean - remains the most widespread and enduring human technology ever created. This example displays a rich brown-red patina and a shiny lustre, formed over the millennia of its burial. As an undoubtedly aesthetic object, its simple form, complimented by a minimalist bronze base, makes it a timeless and thought-provoking display piece that links mankind today to our early ancestors. Provenance Excavated by David Blake (1942-2015) from 1987 to 2013 in the Bishopstone area, Reculver, Kent, UK; Thence by descent. Condition Exceptionally well preserved, intact and unrestored with a beautiful, lustrous patina and original earth deposits. Presented on a bespoke bronze base.
