About the Item

An antique Gothic style glazed encaustic tile by Godwin of Lugwardine; one of 8 similar we have available. Dating to circa 1865, this antique tile is inspired by earlier Gothic and Tudor styling, featuring a pair of falcons or eagles between a coat of arms within a quatrefoil, the outer corners displaying leafy sprays in a deep red/brown and yellow. Examples of this exact Godwin tile design can be found in London’s V&A Museum, Ceramics Room 139, making this one an excellent collector’s piece. Godwin Tiles William Godwin began manufacturing encaustic tiles, bricks and drainpipes at his factory in Lugwardine, Herefordshire in 1851. In later years, William went into partnership with his son and traded as ‘Godwin & Co’, a name that would become reputable until long after William’s death in 1925.
