About the Item

A 19th century post-medieval encaustic tile by English makers Godwin of Lugwardine; one of 6 similar we have available. Dating to circa 1870, this antique tile features a heraldic, coat of arms design in deep red/brown and yellow colours. It bears a central shield detailed with spears and an armoured leg between acorns and oak leaves. An example of this exact Godwin tile design can be found in London’s V&A Museum, making this one an excellent collector’s piece. Godwin Tiles Though William Godwin began manufacturing quarry tiles, bricks and drainpipes at his factory in Lugwardine, Herefordshire in 1851, it wasn’t until 1852 that the firm began making encaustic floor tiles. Based on medieval prototypes, the tiles proved extremely popular and the business opened a second factory at Withington in 1863. In later years, William went into partnership with his son and traded as ‘Godwin & Co’, a name that would become reputable until long after William’s death in 1925.
