About the Item

A strikingly well-preserved fossilised fish from the famed Green River Formation. Preserved in exquisite detail, almost as an anatomical study, this specimen has been identified as Cockerellites liops, an extinct species that lived around 50 million years ago, in the freshwater lake system of prehistoric Wyoming. This example comes from the famed ‘18-inch layer,’ a thin stratigraphic layer within the Green River Formation that is known for producing specimens with exceptional articulation and detail. Widely regarded by collectors and researchers alike as one of the finest sources of fossil fish, fossils from this layer are especially sought after for their completeness and aesthetic quality. Particularly notable is the preservation of soft tissue, a particularly rare occurrence given that such material is typically the first to decay during fossilisation. This level of articulation speaks to the unique conditions of the Green River Formation. Further, this specimen is entirely natural and unrestored, free from the repainting, or enhancement that is frequently seen in Green River fish specimens. With a minimalist wall backing for easy display, it is both a scientifically important specimen and an incredibly aesthetic reminder of the prehistoric environment of the early Eocene. Provenance Legally discovered in South Clear Creek Fossil Quarry, Lewis Ranch, Wyoming USA, with permission from the landowner, in June 2022. Condition Fossil immaculately preserved on the original matrix with no overpainting. With wood panel on reverse for wall mounting.
