About the Item

A fossilised tooth of the dinosaur Allosaurus, wonderfully preserved in its original matrix. This formidable tooth once belonged to an Allosaurus, a fierce predator that roamed North America roughly 150 million years ago. The imposing length and sharpness of the tooth, along with the presence of serrations along both edges, helped the creature slice through the flesh of its prey. The Allosaurus, which means ‘strange reptile’ in Greek, was a vicious carnivore, attacking other dinosaurs and occasionally scavenging the remains of deceased animals. The present tooth would have lined the creature’s jaw with up to 70 other razor-sharp teeth, allowing the predator to chomp and tear through meat with ease. While large Allosaurus teeth are typically around 3 inches (7.6 centimeters) in length, this tooth is almost 4 inches (9.8 centimeters) long, which suggests that it came from a particularly sizable adult. Allosaurus dinosaurs grew up to 40 feet (12 meters) in length and could run at speeds of 21 miles per hour (33 kilometers per hour) on two legs. These daunting capabilities rendered the Allosaurus one of the most feared carnivores of the Late Jurassic era. The present tooth, unrestored and in an excellent state of preservation, provides a captivating insight into the existence of a prehistoric predator. Provenance Legally discovered on private deeded land from the Dana Quarry near Shell Wyoming, with permission of the landowner. Condition Unrestored with excellent preservation.
