About the Item

A spectacular, extremely large tooth with beautiful yellow-orange enamel colour contrasting with the bright white barnacle encrustations. This tooth once belonged to the most terrifying marine predator of the prehistoric age - the Megalodon. This example was discovered in the famed Yorktown Formation, offshore of Wilmington in North Carolina, and dates to the Early Pliocene epoch, around 5.3 to 2.5 million years ago. An icon of the prehistoric, the Megalodon may have been up to 60 feet long (18.3 metres), could have weighed up to 60 tonnes, and had a bite considered the most powerful of any animal, living or extinct. Easily capable of decapitating a large whale with a single bite, its name fittingly translates as ʻbig tooth’. Its closest relative today is the shortfin mako shark, which by comparison grows to be only 14 feet (4.3 metres) long. With a custom display mount and original, uncleaned marine encrustations, it is a striking display piece for atop a desk or shelving and a powerful reminder of the vast prehistoric oceans the megalodon once ruled. Provenance Discovered in the Yorktown Formation, offshore of Wilmington, North Carolina Condition Unrestored with original marine encrustations. Presented with a bespoke bronze display base.
