About the Item

This striking natural sculpture is in fact a meteorite, formed at the creation of our Solar System around 4.5 billion years ago. Journeying across hundreds of millions of miles from the asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter before being drawn into the Earth’s gravitational field, its surface was ultimately shaped by the intense heat and velocity of its fiery descent through our atmosphere. Entering our atmosphere at colossal speed, rather than tumbling and turning as most meteoroids do, this example maintained a stable trajectory - a phenomenon seen in less than 1% of meteorites. The wave-like, elongated dimples that radiate from the apex of its cone-shaped nose are known as regmaglypts, and were formed by atmospheric ablation during its fall. Landing in Northwest Africa, its glossy, umber-coloured fusion crust and close examination reveals remnants of orange encrustations from unknown time spent on the desert floor. Microprobe analysis and imaging at Brown University has classified this specimen as NWA 17940, and it has been formally recorded in the Meteoritical Bulletin, the authoritative global registry for recognised meteorites (no. 114, 2025). Mounted in the orientation in which it fell, on a sleek, custom bronze base, it is a thought-provoking display piece for any interior or collection. Weight: 5 kg Provenance Discovered in Northwest Africa (exact coordinates unknown). Published Meteoritical Bulletin, no. 114, 2025 Condition Good condition. Wear consistent with age. Preserved as found, intact and unrestored with a beautiful dark, glossy fusion crust. Small 20g section removed from reverse for microprobe analysis and imaging at Brown University. Presented on a bespoke bronze display base. Please note that this item is a work of art and is thus exempt from US reciprocal tariffs.
