About the Item

The work stands upon an elegant fluted column base crafted from fruitwood, lacquered in light blue and partially gilded, supported by refined classical-style goat-hoof feet. Surmounting the pedestal is an imposing marine naturalistic composition, dominated at the center by a rare specimen of Blue Coral (Heliopora coerulea). Set into the base of the coral is an array of shells: Pyramid Top Shell (Tectus pyramis – Born, 1778), Common Tower Shell (Turritella communis – Risso, 1826), Silver Conch (Lentigo lentiginosus – Linnaeus, 1758), Cowrie (Cypraea – Linnaeus, 1758), Turban Snail (Turbinidae – Rafinesque, 1815), European Flat Oyster (Ostrea edulis – Linnaeus, 1758), Abalone / Ormer (Haliotis – Linnaeus, 1758), Slate Pencil Sea Urchin Spine (Heterocentrotus mamillatus – Linnaeus, 1758), Italy, circa 1880.
