About the Item

Hand-thrown terracotta bottle from Puglia, southern Italy, dating from the mid to late 19th century. The piece features a rounded lower body, elongated narrow neck, slightly thickened rim, and a small circular footed base. Its silhouette is slender and balanced, widening softly through the central body before narrowing again toward the neck, a form traditionally associated with the storage and transport of liquids within rural domestic life. The surface is covered in a warm honey and reddish-brown glaze with visible tonal variations and vertical glaze movement produced during the firing process. The upper section presents darker concentrations of glaze flowing downward from the neck and shoulders, creating subtle drip effects that emphasize the handmade nature of the object. Areas of exposed terracotta along the base and irregularities in the glaze preserve traces of age, use, and artisanal production. Unlike more heavily ornamented ceramics, the beauty of this bottle lies in its proportion, materiality, and restrained surface treatment. The elongated neck gives the piece an architectural quality, while the rounded body maintains the warmth and softness characteristic of southern Italian utilitarian pottery.
