An exceptionally rare and visually captivating pair of signed Japanese Meiji period cloisonné decorated porcelain covered jars, dating to the Meiji era (1868 to 1912). Richly ornamented and masterfully executed, these highly decorative jars embody the remarkable artistic refinement and technical brilliance that made Japanese decorative arts world renowned during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Each jar is beautifully decorated with elaborate polychrome enamel work against vibrant turquoise blue grounds filled with scrolling motifs, stylized floral forms, and intricate geometric borders in shades of cobalt blue, rose pink, turquoise, cream, and gold. The surfaces are divided into elegant reserves featuring roosters, phoenix birds, flowering branches, songbirds, and traditional decorative motifs, all rendered with exceptional detail and lively movement. One side prominently depicts roosters amongst foliage and flowering vines. In Japanese culture, the rooster symbolizes courage, vigilance, prosperity, and the arrival of light, often associated with protection against evil spirits and good fortune within the household. Their proud stance and animated forms give the compositions tremendous visual energy and character. The reverse reserves feature magnificent phoenix birds soaring amongst blossoming branches. Known in Japanese culture as the Ho-o bird, the phoenix symbolizes renewal, harmony, imperial virtue, and prosperity. Traditionally associated with peace and auspicious rule, the phoenix is one of the most celebrated mythical creatures in Japanese art and decorative culture. The inclusion of both roosters and phoenix birds creates a powerful symbolic balance between earthly vitality and celestial harmony. The turquoise enamel grounds are especially striking and are enriched by delicate gilt highlights and finely executed ornamentation covering nearly every inch of the surface. The domed covers continue the decorative scheme seamlessly and terminate in elegant finials, demonstrating the exceptional attention to detail throughout the pair. Executed on porcelain bodies, these jars combine the elegance and delicacy of fine Japanese porcelain with the richly decorative aesthetic associated with Meiji period cloisonné artistry.
