About the Item

This pair of blue and white porcelain ginger jars was made in China around the 1980s in the Qing style, each hand painted with a symbolic dragon in deep cobalt blue enamel on a white ground. The decoration wraps fluidly around the rounded bodies, the dragons moving among stylised cloud forms in a composition that feels both dynamic and balanced. Each jar stands on a short pedestal foot and rises to a full, rotund body, topped with its original domed lid and rounded knop finial. The surfaces are finished with a clear, lustrous glaze that enhances the contrast between the crisp white ground and the saturated cobalt decoration. On either side of each jar, a moulded moon-style face projects subtly from the body, introducing a sculptural element that distinguishes them from more conventional examples. Border bands at the foot and shoulder frame the central dragon motif and reinforce the traditional blue and white vocabulary associated with Qing-style porcelain. The pair presents cohesively and displays well together, whether placed on a console, mantel, or within a shelving arrangement. Condition is good for age and use, with no chips or cracks observed. There are some minor firing flaws in the porcelain, consistent with the manufacturing process. Height: 28 cm (11.02 in) Diameter: 22 cm (8.66 in)
