About the Item

This planter designed by Signe Persson-Melin is decorated with a finely combed diagonal relief, while the interior and upper rim are left smooth and glazed. The linear decoration recalls both basket weaving and the marks of hand-worked clay. By introducing this textured surface to a precisely formed vessel, Persson-Melin softened the uniformity of industrial production and retained the material presence associated with studio ceramics. Signe Persson-Melin (1925–2022) was one of Sweden’s most influential ceramic artists and designers. Her work is recognised for its clarity of form, careful proportions and close attention to the relationship between material, surface and use. In 1985, she became Sweden’s first professor of ceramic and glass design at Konstfack in Stockholm.
