About the Item

Antique French Vineyard Grape Hod Wine Bucket Winery RED Urn Fireside Box c1890. Direct from France, a wonderful antique metal grape hod or “hotte”, with stunning hand painted French designed artwork. In the 19th century French vineyards, these galvanized metal hods were worn on the backs of grape pickers as they were working the fields, hand harvesting the grapes. Of course, grapes are now picked mechanically, so these old hods are more difficult to find. (NOTE this hod also retains its original leather straps used by the workers in the fields). Before leaving France, artists handed painted the hod; this design is the Châteauneuf-du-Pape, a French vineyard located around the village of Châteauneuf-du-Pape in the Rhône wine region in southeastern France. The "Chateauneuf-du-Pape logo features Saint Peter's keys and papal tiara. Excellent attention to details by the artist, original construction, classic French style and a sophisticated, relevant addition to today’s home, from hanging on a kitchen wall, filled with dry flowers…to standing in the foyer as an umbrella stand…serving as a wood box fireside…decorating an outside patio table…and, of course, in a dining room or wine cellar!!
