About the Item

A handmade turquoise ceramic vase by Alexandre de Wemmel, crafted in Belgium during the 1950s. This distinctive mid-century vessel combines a restrained urn-shaped silhouette with an exceptional display of hand-modelled ceramic decoration. The terracotta body is finished in a vibrant turquoise enamel glaze with finely incised horizontal banding that accentuates its elegant proportions. Around the rim, a sculptural white braided border has been carefully applied by hand before flowing into an intricate plaited cascade at the front, demonstrating the technical skill and artistic individuality of the Belgian ceramicist. The contrast between the glossy turquoise glaze, warm terracotta showing through the relief decoration, and the expressive basketweave motif creates a highly sculptural object that works equally well as a decorative vase or standalone ceramic artwork. Signed and stamped Alexandre de Wemmel and Made in Belgium to the underside. Condition Overall very good vintage condition consistent with age and use. Two stable hairline tension cracks are present to one side together with light age-related glaze crazing. Dimensions Height: 11.2 cm (4.41 in) Diameter: 11 cm (4.33 in)

Turquoise Glass Squat Bottle Vase in Mdina ‘Ming’ Pattern, Signed 1979, Malta

Turquoise Glass Squat Bottle Vase in Mdina ‘Ming’ Pattern, Signed 1979, Malta

By Michael Harris, Mdina

Located in Glasgow, GB

A rare signed Mdina Glass vase from Malta, dated 1979, exemplifying the studio’s bold aesthetic during its formative years. This decorative squat bottle vase is worked in the celebrated ‘Ming’ pattern, with swirling bands of turquoise blue and deep green glass layered over a base of sparkling golden ochre. The colours twist upward in irregular spirals around the rotund body, forming a richly tactile surface that captures the light beautifully. This form—low, broad, and full-bodied—is less commonly encountered, particularly in this scale. Measuring 16.5 cm in both height and diameter, it’s a commanding example of vintage Mdina glass...
