About the Item

This remarkable Art Deco glazed stoneware vase was made under the direction of Charles Catteau for the Boch Frères Keramis manufactory in La Louvière, Belgium. The model was designed in 1920 and produced from this date. It was primarily retailed in France through the Printemps department stores, which played an important role in promoting modern decorative arts during the interwar period. The vase corresponds to Form No. 974 and features Décor D1173. This specific model and decoration are documented and illustrated in Marc Pairon’s authoritative reference work, Art Deco Ceramics – Made in Belgium – Charles Catteau, page 216 (see photos), providing valuable documentation for collectors and confirming its place within Catteau’s documented production. Its elegant ovoid form, finished with a short, narrow neck, provides a perfectly balanced surface for the highly stylized floral decoration. Against an ivory crackle-glazed background, large flowers, leaves, and geometric plant motifs unfold in a warm palette of coppery orange, brown, and black. Dark outlines emphasize each element and give the composition a striking graphic presence. The rhythmic repetition of the decoration around the body creates a sense of movement while maintaining the structured elegance associated with early Art Deco design. Horizontal black and orange bands around the neck and base frame the composition and reinforce the vase’s architectural character. Trained at the École Nationale de Céramique in Sèvres, Charles Catteau joined Boch Frères Keramis in 1906 and later became director of its design studio. He transformed the manufactory’s production through his use of stoneware, bold contrasting colors, and decorative motifs inspired by flowers, animals, and European avant-garde art. Measuring 11.8 inches high and 7.7 inches in diameter (30 cm high and 19.5 cm in diameter), this documented Belgian Art Deco vase makes a strong decorative statement in an Art Deco, modernist, or contemporary interior. It is also a highly appealing collector’s piece for admirers of Charles Catteau, Boch Frères Keramis, and early 20th-century Belgian ceramics.
