About the Item

This exquisite vase by Tiffany Studios depicts water crowfoot blossoms, vines, and leaves rendered in millefiori canes, a glassmaking technique in which long, patterned rods of glass are fused and then sliced so that each cross-section reveals a miniature floral motif. These cane sections are embedded within a clear outer layer over a gold-iridescent interior, created by a thin application of silver nitrate to the inside of the vessel, producing a luminous, reflective glow. Accents of yellow and green foliage emerge against a warm amber-and-yellow ground, while the iridescent interior enhances both the visual depth of the composition and the richness of its color harmonies. Item #: T-22293 Artist: Tiffany Studios New York Country: United States Circa: 1915 Dimensions: 6.75" height. Materials: Favrile Glass Signed: engraved 8851 L L.C. Tiffany - Favrile Macklowe Gallery Curator's Notes: An iconic design, the "Millefiori" was first made around 1913. The range of colors is phenomenal, with the adsence of the typical gold iridescence on the interior, the flowers become the focus of attention. It was so difficult for Leslie Nash and Tiffany's gaffers to create the morning glory, and so exorbitantly expensive, that during the time of their original sale they were among the rarest and most expensive of Tiffany's glass forms.
