About the Item

A beautiful Art Deco earthenware vase with amazing glaze. Made by Anna-Lisa Thomson for Upsala Ekeby in Sweden, 1930s. Great condition - no chips, cracks or crazing. Impressed with makers mark. Upsala Ekeby was one of Sweden’s leading ceramic manufacturers, active from 1886 to 1980. Founded near Uppsala, the factory initially produced bricks and tiles, making use of the area’s abundant clay. By the early 20th century, the company expanded into household ceramics and decorative wares, gradually building a reputation not only for functional products but also for artistic design. The real transformation came during the 1920s and 1930s, when Upsala Ekeby began collaborating with a new generation of designers and artists. This shift coincided with the rise of modernist ideals in Sweden, where “beautiful yet functional” objects were seen as central to everyday life. The 1930s in particular were crucial: they established the creative identity that would carry the company through the mid-20th century. Among the designers who shaped this era were Anna-Lisa Thomson, known for her sculptural vases and stylized plant motifs, and Ingrid Atterberg, whose bold forms and glazes helped define Upsala Ekeby’s modern aesthetic. Hjördis Oldfors contributed clean-lined, decorative pieces, while Mari Simmulson, who joined a little later, became one of the factory’s most celebrated figures, introducing expressive, often playful designs inspired by her Estonian background. Other notable artists included Lillemor Mannerheim and Vicke Lindstrand, each adding their own stylistic voice. Together, they gave Upsala Ekeby a broad and dynamic artistic range, spanning from geometric modernism to more organic and decorative expressions. The 1930s saw Upsala Ekeby exhibit widely and gain recognition for combining artistry with affordability. Pieces from this period often reflected both international modernist currents and Swedish craft traditions, featuring geometric patterns, earthy color palettes, and innovative glazing. These years laid the foundation for Upsala Ekeby’s postwar success, when it grew into a major ceramics group by acquiring Gefle Porslinsfabrik, Rörstrand, and Karlskrona. Though the factory closed in 1980, Upsala Ekeby ceramics remain highly collectible today. Works by its designers—especially those who defined the style of the 1930s and 1940s—are celebrated as part of Sweden’s modern design heritage, reflecting an era when art and everyday life were closely intertwined.
