About the Item

A beautiful Art Deco earthenware vase with amazing glaze. Made by Nyman & Nyman in Höganäs, Sweden, 1930s. Great original condition. No chips, cracks or crazing. Impressed with makers mark. Nyman & Nyman was a ceramic factory in Höganäs that played an important role in sustaining and reshaping the region’s pottery tradition during a time of industrial change. The company was founded in 1930 by the brothers Gustaf and Oskar Nyman, both of whom had previously been employed by Höganäsbolaget. When that company discontinued its earthenware production in 1926, the brothers seized the opportunity to continue the craft independently, establishing their own factory at Margreteberg just outside Höganäs. From the beginning, Nyman & Nyman functioned as a natural continuation of the older Höganäs ceramics tradition. They employed former workers from Höganäsbolaget and used existing molds, which meant that much of their early production closely resembled the utilitarian wares that had long defined the area—durable household objects such as jugs, pots, and storage vessels. At the same time, the factory gradually expanded its range, introducing more decorative and varied items, including tankards and ornamental pieces, often distinguished by richer and more experimental glazes. During the mid-1930s, the company took a more artistically ambitious direction through collaborations with designers such as Arvid Cube, Astrid Aagesen, and Gunvor Nyman-Sjöström. These partnerships brought new stylistic influences into production, including elements inspired by contemporary European design, and helped give the factory a more distinctive visual identity while still remaining grounded in its local ceramic heritage. Following the death of Gustaf Nyman in 1935, Oskar Nyman continued to operate the factory alone until 1946, when it was sold and the original company name eventually disappeared. Despite its relatively brief existence as an independent enterprise, Nyman & Nyman served as an important link between older industrial pottery and more modern ceramic design in Höganäs. By preserving traditional forms while embracing gradual innovation, the factory contributed to the continuity and evolution of one of Sweden’s most enduring ceramic traditions.
