Green and yellow glazed ceramic vase by Eugene Lion. Unsigned. Circa 1920. H : 6.7 x 4.3 inches. - Originally from Saint-Amand, Eugène Lion belonged to one of those families whose members were inseparably connected to the craft of pottery. It was therefore only natural that he joined the family workshop run by his father, Amand Lion, located at a place known as “La Forge” on the outskirts of the village. In 1888, when the Parisian sculptor Jean Carriès came to learn ceramic techniques, Eugène was just 21 years old and his father Amand 50. Both warmly welcomed him into their workshop. Yet it was Eugène who quickly grasped the opportunity to open himself to new horizons; at the end of the nineteenth century, the world—and its clientele—were seeking a new aesthetic. Before Carriès’ arrival in Saint-Amand, no workshop had imagined producing decorative glazed pieces. Certainly, superb slag-glazed stoneware emerged from the kilns of local artisans, but these works remained within a traditional framework. From an early stage, the young Eugène absorbed the innovative impulse initiated by Carriès. This influence endured among his followers until the First World War (1914–1918). The transmission of this legacy is attested in numerous writings, notably those of Jeanneney, as well as through collaborations with Abbé Pacton and William Lee, evidenced by the presence of double signatures on the back of stoneware pieces. Thanks to his creative imagination and remarkable mastery of his craft, Eugène Lion produced extensively, primarily decorative works: vases of all shapes and sizes, generally wheel-thrown and glazed, sometimes deliberately distorted or incised. His color palette—browns, blacks, ochres, and turquoise blue—was later adopted by many followers. A distinctive achievement was his development of a copper-red glaze in the 1920s, which further enhanced his already well-established reputation. He frequently exhibited at the Salon of the Groupe d’Émulation Artistique du Nivernais in Nevers (from 1922 to 1938), while also selling directly from his workshop. Warm-hearted and generous with his time, and deeply committed to transmission, he welcomed many trainees and enthusiasts seeking authentic craftsmanship. Among the most notable was Jeanne Boutet de Monvel, just before the Second World War; she later became Madame Pierlot and, in the 1950s, founded the Poterie de Ratilly with her husband. After Eugène’s death in 1945, the Lion workshop was taken over by his son Pierre and his daughter Thérèse—thus beginning another chapter in its history.
